Often times a building is a building. Individually they can quickly blend together. But collectively they articulate a city’s architectural (and perhaps cultural) legacy.
When you go from one city to the next there are a few things that jump out to the visitor:
- Width of sidewalks – is there a walking legacy?
- Landscaping – are buildings on top of the street, are trees common, is the landscaping regionally centric?
- Construction materials – what is the look and feel of the buildings?
- Expense – are the buildings clearly well put together and expensive in appearance?
Knowing the what, but more importantly the why, behind each of these gives you not just expertise in the buildings themselves but also in the city, the people and the region. Your expertise will be elevated beyond someone who simply knows the market and is a financial or negotiating wizard.
